I’m bouncing in chest deep in water so almost perfect it makes you say, “damn,” and snap your fingers the way only ”almosts'” can. It’s the perfect temperature, but the water is dark from the back sands. There’s light waves, but the ground is rocky and pinches your feet. I’m surrounded by happy Filipino children, but there is a big white American in front of me who won’t stop talking about something.
Business. Me. My house. Me. Wave wall. Me. Business… The other sounds of the Philippines are children, loud in foreign tongues. My father is in conversation with Jonel, who’s portrait I just took, about the village’s ailing elder and the dying salt farming technique of the region; murmurs. A skipping stone skips once and ends in a splash. Kids cheer anyway. All against the back drop of the wind and the waves and the babbling of this dude: Oil. Me. Development. Me. Business. My house. My wall…
I don’t hear too much of any of it. He’s a nice guy, but my attention is on the sky. The east horizon is reaching toward the west like the spreading wings of a hawk and it’s gathering color in its feathers as if it needed light for flight. Inside, I struggle with, “to shoot, or not to shoot.” I’m having another I-quit-photography-day. Artists know: the struggle is real.
The colors are compelling, though. Later, I will desaturate the pinks so the world will believe the Philippines’ unbelievable skies. I scramble over the rocky shallows mumbling something about going to take a picture, fearing I missed the best of it already. Then tip toe back into ocean as if the rocks are eggs shells to balance upon with my camera and my salty tripod. Precarious. The show is almost over.
The wing is on fire. The hawk is now a Phoenix. Beneath it I am waving down pump boats to become part of my composition. At what felt like the last minute I realized that I had my own pump boat and driver. Finger snap, duh! How did I miss that? This boat brought me here. We get him to swing boat around and bam! We have photography.
