A Sun Story

A Note From The Artist

This picture shows a zoomed in portion of A Sun Story to illustrate the level of detail in the image.

Finding tree farms in eastern Oregon is not too difficult, the region is full of them. So much so that it is difficult to know where one ends and another begins. And the roads; they go on and on for what seems like forever. It is no surprise to you, then, that it has taken me several overnight trips to find a scene like “A Sun Story.” All the elements have to line up for a capture such as this: the field, the light, the degree to which fall has taken hold, and luck. One has to give credit where its due and I attribute A Sun Story to luck.  I had been driving for hours on my second day on the farm roads and the sun was already two spans above the horizon by the time I spied these three trees. They stood defiantly against an autumn that had claimed the winter’s toll in leaves from an entire forest. I was blown away by the contrast of life on display.

The photograph is panoramic with stunning clarity and detail. Five images were captured with a full frame Nikon D800 at 200mm. Without enlarging the final piece you can print her at a full sixty inches and see each branch and leaf and even the texture of the bark on the trees. This wonderful clarity is what allows me to print A Sun Story to 32×96 inches. I’ll admit, however, that such a large image stretched the processing power of my computer to its limits. Still, if I am to admit to a grueling and slow post production then I should also allow that the slowing of my workflow allowed me to think through each detail and tone thoroughly and I am proud of the result.

Edition of 50.

About the prints: I print on a premium substrate that is unparalleled in depth and luminosity. The material refracts light in such a way that light travels laterally through the paper as well as reflects to the audience creating a brilliant effect that many mistake to be rear illumination. Each print is then face mounted to acrylic and sandwiched to a protective backing. The artwork is then framed or a recessed mount is added to the back to float on the wall. I offer Tabacchino and other handmade framing options. Available starting  20”x60” 24”x72” 28”x84” 32”x96” and custom sizes. Below are examples in 4” frames with and without liners. More arrangements are available. Liners are available in Black, White, Beige. See FRAMES in the menu above for more frames and liner options.
