Dance | Boardman, Oregon

A Note From The Artist

I spent my birthday sleeping in a truck. Ice had coated both sides of my windshield because I’d left the windows down. My sleeping bag was made for 0°, and honestly, I thought I was just going to nap for an hour or so.

Have you ever had to scrape both sides of your windshield? It’s a pain.

Oversleeping (ten years ago I could thrive on just a few hours of sleep) plus the ice made me late to the groves in Boardman.

I had only a few minutes to pick a section of forest and commit to photographing it. As soon as I parked, I immediately took off running into the woods. There were just moments before that brief window of magic light would begin—and even fewer before it was gone.

About the photograph

Dance is a fine art photograph of a poplar forest grove in Boardman, Oregon. The scene was beautifully composed by nature and man with tall, slender trees arranged in neat, parallel rows. The warm light of the early morning or late afternoon sun bathes the tree trunks, casting a soft magenta-golden hue. The light creates long, dramatic shadows on the forest floor, which is covered in fallen leaves and undergrowth. The trees seem to stretch endlessly into the distance, creating a sense of depth and symmetry. Two things I love when creating with this idea of “Comfortable Isolation”. The lighting and arrangement give the scene a peaceful yet mystical atmosphere.

When I search for scenes to capture, I’m looking for a way to feel isolated within the composition. There are two ways to do that, to remove the subject from distraction or to immerse the subject in so much detail that one can’t help but to feel alone in all the noise. I loved the way this section of the groves seemed to be an immense thicket with only one way through. Will you walk the path of clarity with me?

About the prints: I print on a premium substrate that is unparalleled in depth and luminosity. The material refracts light in such a way that light travels laterally through the paper as well as reflects to the audience creating a brilliant effect that many mistake to be rear illumination. Each print is then face mounted to acrylic and sandwiched to a protective backing. The artwork is then framed or a recessed mount is added to the back to float on the wall. I offer Tabacchino and other handmade framing options. Available starting  20”x60” 24”x72” 28”x84” 32”x96” and custom sizes. Below are examples in 4” frames with and without liners. More arrangements are available. Liners are available in Black, White, Beige. See FRAMES in the menu above for more frames and liner options.
