a note from the artist
On Rialto Beach there once stood a tree that was a beacon for every story of triumph that ever was. It grew, proud in its solitude, from an equally solitary and stubborn spine of the earth - a monolith. I captured this old soul at sunrise on New Years Day, 2015. It was a magical moment that lasted about three hours. I climbed a massive fallen tree, at least 10’ above the beach and captured an amazing dawn. Then I waited, sometimes pacing back and forth, much of the time standing as still as the monolith while the waves and the sky moved around us. I didn’t move my camera a millimeter for fear of smudging my frame and, as time crept by, missing the moment. The sun is rising behind us in this photograph, in which we are facing west. Soon it would crest the headlands and forests behind me and its first rays of light would alight on the tree and the face of the monolith. It happened 53 minutes after nautical sunrise, nearly three hours after I set up shop with my modest camera. I was equal parts excited and relived, tired and cold. But I got the shot. As far as I know, these are the only photographs of this kind. As a result of extraordinarily heavy storms this winter, the monolith and the tree are gone.

About the prints: I print on a premium substrate that is unparalleled in depth and luminosity. The material refracts light in such a way that light travels laterally through the paper as well as reflects to the audience creating a brilliant effect that many mistake to be rear illumination. Each print is then face mounted to acrylic and sandwiched to a protective backing. The artwork is then framed or a recessed mount is added to the back to float on the wall. I offer Tabacchino and other handmade framing options. Available starting 20”x40” 30”60” 36”x72” and custom sizes. Below are examples in 4” frames with and without liners. More arrangements are available. Liners are available in Black, White, Beige. See FRAMES in the menu above for more frames and liner options.
