Meet Jason:
Born in New York and shuffled worldwide by the military, Jason Matias tried to be a “normal” guy, but the creative spirit won the battle for control over his life. Today he is a career artist, author, and educator living in a loft in the woods outside of Seattle. With aspirations of becoming a fighter pilot, 20-year-old Jason would never have predicted the shape of his life today.
Jason’s first career was as a Munitions Systems Specialist in the United States Air Force. He joined at 18, and his first station was in North Pole, AK. Munitions or “AMMO” wasn’t his first choice of vocation but building and maintaining bombs and missiles has become a core part of who he is. IYAAYAS
“I always knew I was going to be in the military. All the first sons in my family were. I learned a lot in the Air Force. I grew up. And, serving a greater purpose felt good.” - Jason
After six years in the USAF and one tour in OEF, Jason moved himself to Hawaii, where he finished his BA in Business and an MS in Organizational Leadership. However, he remained “blacklisted,” as he puts it, and never managed to find full-time employment despite graduating at top of his class and having an impressive resume.
That is how he became an artist. By applying the lessons he learned in business with the passion that paid him throughout undergrad and grad school, he created a business in art. He discusses these transitions hilariously in his TEDx Talk, Beautiful Things That Are Gone.
Now, after more than a decade as a professional artist and almost 18 years behind a camera, Jason continues to create and inspire. His portfolio includes works created both in-studio and in far-reaching places like Abu-Dhabi, Indonesia, Iceland, and across America. His recognizable style, “Comfortable Isolation,” laces through his photography from pieces like Edge of Solace, below, to scenes like those in his Lonely Boat Series and even into his avant-garde Aria Collection. Jason has done the work and the introspection and put thousands of hours into his craft to put together a beautiful portfolio of images.
Also An Author
Jason’s recent memoir, NakedThoughts, has nothing to do about photography but is rather a treatise on being human… in a brutally honest and funny way.
It was released in June 2020 and quickly reached Best Seller status in Travel Humor.
